                 General Sound User's manual

"General Sound" soundcard (or simply GS) is designed to be compatible with
any Spectrum-compatible computer 48/128/256/512... It provides you with
quality playback of digital music in *.MOD formate, and individual digital
samples. Separate processor and memory is used for playback, mod player is
situated in the ROM of GS. Control of GS is made by software by Spectrum side.

WARNING! It's very important to control voltage inside your computer, because
quite often it is too low (4.5V instead of 5.0V). This could cause GS incor-
rect work. Stable work of GS is guaranteed only with voltage above 4.8V.
Generally, all impulse adapters make possile to calibrate their output voltage
manually.

WARNING!!! All manipulations should be done with the power turned off!!!
Also take care with connection of slots, because system slot of GS has no
protection from incorrect connection!

GS is inserted into system slot the way, that its chips "look" on
computer's chips.

GS could be connected to any Spectrum-compatible computer with the help of
wires. In this case the following conditions should be applied:

1. Use wires with minimal length (less than 20-25 cm). In another cases
it could cause incorrect work of your computer.
2. It would be better if you will use power directly from adapter, not from
computers motherboard.
3. Be accurate!

All required signals are situated at your computer CPU's pins, so you
shouldn't seek for them throughout the whole motherboard.
Here's the table with all information:

Pins of system slot of General Sound

------------------------------ --------------------------------
Signal Z80 pin Contact Signal Z80 Pin Contact

  A5.........35.........A23 D5..........9.........B10
  A6.........36.........A22 D6.........10.........B9

  M1.........27.........B24 GND........29......A6,A7,A30,B30

If you don't know where your spectrum has IORQCE signal then perform the
following actions:
1. Disconnect 20th pin of the CPU from all circuits (IORQ)
2. Into this gap tinker 330-470 Ohms resistor.
3. Now 20th pin of the CPU will be called as IORQ, and the place where
it was before will be called as IORQCE.
4. Upgraded computer will be fully functional after this upgrade.

By the way, this IORQCE signal will be usable for you for connection of
other peripheral devices.

Test for right conncetion:

10 OUT 187,244
15 PAUSE 100
20 PRINT IN 179

You should see number 3.

Memory extension card for General Sound
Connection Manual.

This card is installed into expansion slot of your GS (vertical pins), so
after connection it closes part of GS board.
Initialization is done automatically, and you don't need any additional
software.

Test for right connection:

 1 OUT 187,244
 2 PAUSE 400
 3 PRINT IN 179

You should see number 14.

Now maximal size of loaded modules is 466 kb.

Warning! GS board hasn't got one wire for one signal!

You should connect 27th pin of any RAM chip on GS board with the
17th pin in the section "A" of expansion slot (shown as * on picture).
RAM chips look like tinkered with each other chips.
